HOTTEST BOLLYWOOD PETA ACTIVISTS

Malaika Arora Khan
Malaika was seen in a macaw inspired dress, campaigning against subjecting birds to acts of cruelty. With such a sizzling woman begging for support, who would even bother to think about any act of torture?

John Abraham
John Abraham has been a long time supporter of PETA and has always been vocal about it. From promoting vegetarianism to turning into an 'eco-warrior' for elephants, John has done it all for the noble cause of animal welfare.

Shahid Kapoor
Apart from turning others (read Kareena Kapoor) into staunch vegetarians like him, Shahid Kapoor keeps his hands full with PETA campaigns. He has been crowned Asia's Sexiest Vegetarian thanks to his love for animals and his active support to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Lara Dutta
Lara Dutta joined the PETA bandwagon just last year and is promoting the cause of vegetarianism. For her first major campaign for PETA, Lara sported a spectacular gown made entirely of vegetables. After seeing the ad, we're sure every other girl would want vegetables all over her in a bid to look as hot as Lara.

Imran Khan
Imran Khan is the latest star to join PETA's relentless campaign for the well-being of animals. Imran's campaign deals with promoting the adoption of stray dogs. Imran himself has adopted one and makes sure he does practice what he preaches.

Sonu Sood
Sonu Sood very recently went shirtless for PETA's 'Go Vegetarian' campaign. The campaign featuring Sonu has a tag line which says 'Strong Body. Tender Heart.' And if Sonu Sood can have such an enviable body despite being a hardcore vegetarian, what's stopping you guys?

Celina Jaitley
Celina Jaitley has also been quite active in fighting for the cause of animals since a few years. Early this year Celina locked herself up in a cage to bring to light the brutalities faced by animals in AIIMS. With the light eyed beauty beckoning them to listen, AIMMS officials would probably be too dumb to not listen to it.

Jiah Khan
The not-so-busy-with-acting starlet also seems to be be sensitive towards animals and their safety. Her first campaign was in favour of a ban against glass-coated manja (string) which is used for flying kites in order to save birds. Jiah also extended her support for PETA against snake charming. Seems like the actress is doing something worthwhile in Bollywood after all.

A Memory Tonic for the Aging Brain

Well Tara Parker-Pope on Health by Danielle Ofri, M.D.

Why, as we grow older, do we forget where we parked the car, and could exercise sharpen our recall? Those questions, of considerable interest to any of us who possess a brain as well as those with cars, is motivating a series of remarkable new experiments by researchers at Johns Hopkins University and the Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory at the University of California, Irvine, during which young and older volunteers watch pictures flash onto a screen, while the scientists watch their brains.
Creating and accessing memories are complicated processes, with the specific physiological mechanisms still largely unknown. But, using brain scans, neuroscientists already have established that quite a bit of the electrical activity and blood flow associated with memory processing occurs in the dentate gyrus, a part of the brain within the hippocampus, a larger portion of the brain known to be involved with learning and thinking.
So for their latest study, published this month in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers used advanced magnetic resonance imaging machines to scan the dentate gyrus and other areas within the brains of people at the very moment that they were in the process of trying to create and store certain new memories.
It turned out that young adults were quite good at differentiating the images into those that were brand-new, already seen or similar to but not exactly the same as earlier pictures (a baby grand piano instead of a full grand, for instance). The brain activity in each young person’s dentate gyrus responded accordingly. “There would be a lot of activity when young people saw either new or similar objects,” said Michael A. Yassa, an assistant professor of psychological and brain sciences at Johns Hopkins and lead author of the study. The young people’s brains were, this activity indicates, learning and storing the new images as new images, even when they were quite similar to the images they had seen before.Specifically, the volunteers, wearing head sensors, were shown a series of pictures of everyday objects, like computers, telephones, pineapples, pianos and tractors, and asked to press a button indicating whether each object typically was found indoors or outside. They were not asked to remember the images. But later they were shown another set of images and asked whether they remembered seeing that specific photo before or a similar photo, or whether the picture was completely new to them. The researchers tracked brain activity throughout both tasks.
The brains of the older volunteers, ages 60 to 80, though, did not seem to work as well. Their dentate gyri typically showed far less activity when they were shown a similar but not identical image. Their brains apparently did not create a completely new memory to correspond to the slightly different picture, so that the photo of the baby grand registered as no different than the one of the full grand. In turn, they usually referred to pictures that were similar but not identical to ones they’d seen earlier as “old” photos.
None of these lapses were severe. But they do indicate, Dr. Yassa said, that the older adults were less successful at pattern separation, or the ability to differentiate between things that are quite similar.
There are many different types of memory processing, of course, but one of the more important for everyday functioning is pattern separation. “Take breakfast,” Dr. Yassa said. Most of us follow a routine and eat much the same thing at the same time for breakfast most days, he said. But each morning’s meal is unique and should produce a unique set of memories. “You need to be able to separate those memories and keep them apart,” Dr. Yassa said. “Otherwise they can override one another and confuse things.”
Aging, Dr. Yassa’s work suggests, blunts our ability to separate yesterday’s corn flakes from last Wednesday’s raisin bran, or today’s parking slot from Monday’s. The problem is, in part, structural, he believes. In a separate part of his experiments, using newly developed M.R.I. scanning technology, he found that the dentate gyrus in many of the older volunteers was not connected as robustly to the rest of the brain as in young people. Messages did not flow as easily from elsewhere in the brain to the dentate gyrus memory center, and vice versa.
But there is hope, Dr. Yassa said. “Exercise is one of the things that might directly change this process,” he said. In other experiments, exercise has been found to jump-start neurogenesis, or the creation of new brain cells, especially in the dentate gyrus, he said, potentially improving that area’s health and functioning.
The process has worked in rodents. A heartening study from last year conducted at the National Institute on Aging found that mice that voluntarily scampered on running wheels displayed an “enhanced” ability to separate closely spaced squares on a display screen, the animal equivalent of pattern recognition, compared with sedentary animals. The runners also had far more new neurons in their dentate gyri than the mice that didn’t run.
The extent to which exercise improves pattern recognition processing in people is still unknown. But Dr. Yassa is including measures of physical fitness and exercise history as part of his continuing research. The results so far look encouraging, he said.
“What I’d say for now is that you can’t go wrong by exercising,” he said. “We don’t know if it can reverse” any damage if you already have memory slips. But there are indications that it might slow or possibly prevent memory deterioration, if you begin exercising early enough — meaning that, among the many benefits of a health club membership, your workout may help you to recall where in the gym parking lot you left your car.

STRAUSS-KAHN STEPS DOWN AS HEAD OF IMF

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, who is facing attempted rape charges in New-York, announced his resignation late Wednesday night.

In a statement, Strauss-Kahn said he is resigning "with infinite sadness" in an effort "to protect this institution."

Strauss-Kahn is being held without bail at New-York's Rikers Island prison. Police arrested him Saturday after he boarded an Air France flight at John F Kennedy airport in New-York. He will appear in court on Friday.

A Letter by Strauss-Kahn to Board:-

May 18, 2011

Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund
700 19th St., NW.
Washington, D.C. 20431

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Board:

It is with infinite sadness that I feel compelled today to present to the Executive Board my resignation from my post of Managing Director of the IMF.

I think at this time first of my wife—whom I love more than anything—of my children, of my family, of my friends.

I think also of my colleagues at the Fund; together we have accomplished such great things over the last three years and more.

To all, I want to say that I deny with the greatest possible firmness all of the allegations that have been made against me.

I want to protect this institution which I have served with honor and devotion, and especially—especially—I want to devote all my strength, all my time, and all my energy to proving my innocence.

AYODHYA DISPUTE: A TIMELINE

The Ayodhya dispute has been an emotive issue for decades and mired in a slew of legal suits involving Hindu and Muslim religious groups. Following is the history, chronology and timeline of the Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid issue till the Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court on Thursday delivered its verdict on the Ayodhya title suit.

* 1528: A mosque is built on the site by Mughal emperor Babar which Hindus claim is the birth place of Lord Ram and that a temple had existed there earlier.

* 1853: First recorded incidents of communal violence at the disputed site take place.

* 1859: British officials erect a fence to separate the places of worships, allowing the inner court to be used by Muslims and the outer court by Hindus.

* 1885: The first suit was filed by Mahant Raghubir, seeking permission to build a temple on Ram Chabootra, but the petition was dismissed by the Faizabad district court a year later.

* 1949: Idol of Lord Ram surfaces inside mosque. Muslims claim that it was kept there by Hindus.

Muslims protest, and both parties file civil suits. The government proclaims the premises a disputed area and locks the gates.

* January 18, 1950: The first title suit filed by Gopal Singh Visharad asking for the right to worship the idols installed at 'Asthan Janmabhoomi'. The court restrained the removal of idols and allowed the worship to continue.

* April 24, 1950: The State of UP appeals against the injunction order.

* 1950: Ramchandra Paramhans files another suit, but withdraws later.

* 1959: Nirmohi Akhara enters the fray and files the third suit, seeks possession of the site, doing away with the court-appointed receiver. It claims itself to be the custodian of the spot at which Ram was supposedly born.

* December 18, 1961: UP Sunni Central Board of Waqfs moves in to claim possession of the mosque and adjoining land.

* 1964: All four suits filed consolidated in one title suit.

* 1986: On a plea of Hari Shanker Dubey, a district judge directs Masjid gates to be unlocked to allow 'darshan'.

Muslims set up Babri Masjid Action Committee.

* 1989: A fresh suit is filed by former VHP vice-president Deoki Nandan Agarwala in the name of Lord Ram for declaration of the title and possession in its favour at the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad HC.

* October 23, 1989: All the four suits, pending before a Faizabad court transferred to a special bench of the HC.

* 1989: VHP lays foundations of a Ram temple on land adjacent to the disputed mosque.

* 1992: The Babri mosque was demolished, resulting in widespread riots across the country.

* Jan, 1993:  After the demolition, the then  President Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma sent a single-point reference under Article 143 to the Supreme Court to decide whether a Hinduon wh temple existed in the area ich the structure stood.

* Oct 1994: The Supreme Court declines to answer the Presidential Reference and returns it.

* Jul 2010: The Allahabad High Court wraps up title suit hearing, set September 24 as the verdict date.

* Sept 22, 2010: A retired bureaucrat, Ramesh Chandra Triparthi, approaches Supreme Court seeking deferment of the Allahabad High Court verdict on the Ayodhya title suit.

* Sep 23, 2010: A day ahead of the Allahabad High Court verdict, the Supreme Court stays the Allahabad High Court judgment for one week.

* Sep 27, 2010:  After petitioner Ramesh Chandra Tripathi, another key party in the matter, Nirrmohi Akhara, said it would move the Supreme Court for postponement of the judgment for three months to facilitate an out-of-court amicable settlement.

* Sep 28, 2010: The Supreme Court rejects the deferment plea, paving way for the Allahabad High Court to pronounce its verdict on the title suit.

* Sept 30: The Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court has delivered its verdict on Ramjanambhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case and said that the disputed land at Ayodhya will be divided equally between all three parties – the Wakf Board, Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lala Virajman.
